Its summer! And with summer comes lifted moods and fun in the sun. However, with many summer holidays and cookouts, you may be tempted to indulge a little too much. Or perhaps you are having too much fun and start to neglect your health. Here are some tips on how to stay healthy and happy this summer!
Tip #1 Hydrate
With temperatures soaring in the Dallas area, it can be easily to get dehydrated. When the body is thirsty, it can sometimes mistake it for hunger. If you feel hungry, take a drink of water first. If this quashes your hunger, you were probably never hungry in the first place. Also, be sure to stay hydrated with water or unsweetened iced tea. It can be tempting to reach for a soda or juice when thirsty, but these are just packed with sugar and unwanted calories. Also, too much alcohol can actually dehydrate you more.
Tip #2 Exercise
If the temperature permits, biking to your destination instead of driving is a great way to stay active in the summer. It can also save money on gas! The average person can burn around 400 calories during a one hour bike ride. Hiking is also a great way to enjoy the outdoors while burning some calories, along with other outdoor activities like canoeing, swimming and rock climbing.
Tip #3 Wear Sunscreen
It is extremely important to always wear sunscreen when spending time outside. Even if it seems too cloudy to get burnt, UVA and UVB rays can still penetrate your skin. Make sure to slather on a broad spectrum variety for full protection. Also, remember to reapply every 30 mins when exercising or swimming!
